Celebrating the life of

Earnest Nelson Kimmer

July 14, 1941 - February 15, 2025

Earnest Nelson Kimmer

Ernest “Nelson” Kimmer, aged 83, passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family on February 15th, 2025 at Memorial Health University Medical Center. He was born in 1941 in Savannah, Georgia where he lived for his entire life.

He & the love of his life, Carolyn, had a small wedding ceremony in the church Carolyn was raised in which ushered in nearly 65 years of marriage. He was so proud of her & the life that they had together that he would ask perfect strangers, “Do you know how long we’ve been married?” Together they raised a family who joined them on many adventures from camping to skiing to sailing; later on he traveled many places with her, including Vancouver and Rio De Janeiro. More recently, they spent their time together by going on frequent day trips to idyllic picnic locations with their beloved pomeranian Morgann.

An absolute legend in his field, he was a dedicated survey party chief for Hussey & Gay for over five decades. He was a second generation surveyor with an innate talent for the work and found it to be a lifelong passion.

Nelson was an outgoing man, and it was not unusual to find him chatting with someone he’s never met as if they were old friends. He was always willing to take the time to talk with anyone or help them if they were in need. No one who met Nelson could forget his charm and effortless humor. The kindness that flowed from him was not exclusive to humans, as he was a passionate animal lover as well.

He was an avid golfer, and when not playing golf on the weekends, he could be found watching sports (or “the game”, as he would say) on TV. While he loved all sports, he was particularly fond of both professional and college football, especially the Georgia Bulldogs.

To cherish his memories & legacy, he leaves behind  his wife, Carolyn; his children Donna and Eddie (Mary); his grandchildren Amanda (Steven) Holloway-Spelman, Christopher, Devin (Tyler) Holloway-Smith and Stephanie; his great grandchildren Isabella, Lundon, Archer, Oliver and Greysen Elliot.

Family, friends and others are invited to Fox & Weeks at 7200 Hodgson Memorial Drive from 5pm to 7pm on February 19th to reminisce about the long, full life of Nelson. A graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens at 315 Greenwich Road on February 20th at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations in his memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or One Love Animal Rescue.

"Aunt" Carolyn and the entire Kimmer family-we are so sorry for your loss! "Uncle" Nelson was a gentle giant! Every time I saw him, he shared a smile and always asked about my family. His laugh was infectious! We will all miss him, but he will live forever in our hearts!

- Lynn Odom, Savannah, GA

My sincere condolences go out to all the family. I was on Nelson's survey crew years ago at HGB, and he was one of my mentors. I learned a LOT from Nelson, most importantly that it HAD TO BE DONE RIGHT. He was tough but fair, and I have used what I learned from him in my career and in my life. He was one of the all-time great Party Chiefs and was a credit to our profession.

Carolyn and Eddie and family, I am so sorry that I cannot be with you during this difficult time because of health issues. Thank you so much for letting me know about Nelson. It sounds like it was peaceful and not a long time of suffering. He was a sweet man and I will always cherish your visits on one of your “road trips” , especially recently at Robertville Church!! I am thankful Nelson and I were cousins and shared the same Blakewood /Faust family roots from our Mother’s who were first cousins. Now, may you know God’s comfort and blessings in the days ahead. You are in my thoughts and prayers!! Love, Gloria Tuten
